A ghostly coyote inhales the heat
and pants along Death Valley's red stone.
Always without, it lives enough to starve.
And yet, it hunts and haunts
with trailing pups.
Its carrion canine eyes search
for such contentment
it has never known nor will.
And better than any man's words
those eyes will say,
you're going to need water for the way.
